David Cook was the first performer of the night and he chose the following songs to sing:
1-”Baba O’Reilly” originally performed and recorded by The Who.
2-”Hungry Like the Wolf” originally performed and recorded by Duran Duran.
“Hungry Like the Wolf” Critiques”
Randy thought it was an okay choice and a solid performance. Just okay.
Paula thought that his “Hungry Like the Wolf” left her with a big appetite.
Simon thought it was good, but he did understand where Randy was coming from. And he thought it was good enough to make it through to next week.
“Baba O’Reilly” Critiques:
Randy thought there was something going on with him tonight. But the second song was more David then the first song.
Paula just wants more David Cook.
Simon said, “Welcome back David Cook.”
Hopefully having performed first won’t hurt David. Unfortunately, there are many people that feel whomever performs first generally goes home the next night.
David Cook took the stage after Jason Castro to sing his second choice of the night. His selection? “All I Really Need is You”
Randy told Cook he rocked the house again. Blazing.
Paula told him she was proud of him. She also told him that he was the only one to pull of picking obscure song choices. Finally, she told him she felt she was already looking at the American Idol. Way to go David!
Simon thought his first performance was okay but his second performance was brilliant. That was smart. Well done!
Loud screams from the crowd.
David Cook performed second tonight and chose the Neil Diamond song “I’m Alive.”
Diamond felt it was a good and gutsy choice of song. He also felt that he would do great.
David Cook got the pimp spot of the night which is usually a good thing. Will it be tonight? We will find out.
For tonight’s performance he chose the song “The Music of the Night” from the musical The Phantom of the Opera.
Webber told David to imagine he was singing to the most beautiful girl. He felt that David may make it work.
Randy felt it was an amazing vocal performance. He thought it was molten hot.
Paula felt it proved that he’s well rounded as a performer and that it was fantastic.
Simon didn’t like this side of David but he made the most of it.
Singing in the sixth spot tonight was David Cook. He chose the Mariah Carey song, “Always Be My Baby” off of the album, Daydream.
David surprised Mariah when he chose the song he did because she wasn’t sure what he was going to do with it. He made her proud of the changes he made in the song to make it different.
Randy thinks he’s ready to make an album. He then stood up and said that was the most brilliant performance yet.
Paula said the song he chose could be in movie soundtracks already. Simon said it was like coming out of karaoke hell into a breath of fresh air because he was original, daring and it stood out by a mile. He felt that it was a sign of a great artist — someone who takes risk. OH YEAH!!
David Cook was the fifth performer this evening with his song of choice, “Innocent” by Our Lady Peace. It appeared on the album, A Decade which was released on November 28, 2006.
David wrote on his hand “Give Back.”
Randy didn’t feel it was one of his strongest weeks. Paula thinks he’s the whole package. Simon didn’t like the performance all that much. He felt it was a bit pompous.
David Cook is the second Idol to take the stage singing his own version of “Little Sparrow” that appeared on the Dolly album of the same name.
He looks sharp as he stands there with the spotlight on him and his guitar.
Randy loves that David has been showing his range and showing his falsetto. Another HOT, consistent performance. Paula, well, she liked his hair cut. Paula thought the song was fantastic. Simon didn’t feel it was as good as last week but because he made a song about sparrows turn out well he felt congratulations were in order.
The last performer of the night was David Cook singing the 1983 Michael Jackson hit song, “Billie Jean.” His version was much slower than MJ’s version. Randy said David is the most bold and original contestant they’ve ever had. He might be the one to win the competition. Blazing, molten hot! Paula couldn’t sit down. She said he was smart and brilliant. Simon said that was brave. He said it could have either been insane or amazing and it was AMAZING! The crowd roared in agreement.
