Jason Castro took the stage third tonight with a ukelele in hand. He chose the song, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” originally sung by Ms. Judy Garland. It appeared on the Wizard of Oz soundtrack released in 1939. During Season 5 of American Idol, Katharine McPhee also sang this song.
Randy thought Jason was back in the game tonight. Paula thought he picked the perfect song and he did a good job. Simon thought it was fantastic! Um Hm!

Was the song “over the rainbow” done on idol this year?? Was this song repeated?
Anonymous 9:12 pm on April 8, 2008
Sorry, not a repeat. I was thinking of “Halleluhah”.
Keeks 9:13 pm on April 8, 2008
Absolutely Amazing! Definitely will be downloading this song!
Anonymous 9:31 pm on April 8, 2008
Yo the kid is like the rock star Obama….. beautiful and a great singer
Greg 9:38 pm on April 8, 2008
Same version of the song (I think Simon said it was the second version he heard) was also played in the movie Finding Forrester (2000). The movie was directed by Gus Van Sant, with Sean Connery, Rob Brown, F. Murray Abraham. An afro-american teen writing prodigy finds a mentor in a reclusive author.

DrM2B 10:07 pm on April 8, 2008
it was also on ER when mark dies in Hawaii …. =) that was the sad one i think brian was referring to…
Mike 10:14 pm on April 8, 2008
He’s doing the version made popular by the Hawaiian singer Iz (I can’t spell his last name). I see Simon recognized it.
Nancy B. 10:18 pm on April 8, 2008
Jason sang the version by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, a wonderful singer from Hawaii who has since passed on. Iz sang it coupled with “What a Wonderful World.” And yes, it was on an ER episode, in Meet Joe Black and in Finding Forrester.
Kris 10:18 pm on April 8, 2008
Gig ‘Em Aggies!!! Jason is amazing and the only Idol besides David Cook to have a really unique style that will make it in the music world, ala John Mayer, Jack Johnson!!!!
Mel 10:23 pm on April 8, 2008
The most recent movie was Fred Claus
Anna C. 10:24 pm on April 8, 2008

The version that a lot of people are referring to is the one done by the late Israel Kamakawiowo’ole (never heard him called Iz before) (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=6920356&s=143441 )
It’s a melody of Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World. It was released in 1993 on his album Facing Future. It appeared in the movie 50 First Dates and recently in a car commercial.
BillDavis 11:47 pm on April 8, 2008
Wouldn’t Jason have to be white to do a “crappy white boy” version?
Lyle 11:49 pm on April 8, 2008
@JosephLewis - He’s often referred to as Iz or brother Iz, in fact, the title of one of his albums is Iz
JosephLewis 11:55 pm on April 8, 2008
@Lyle - I didn’t know that, thanks, I only have his Facing World album
swf 12:02 am on April 9, 2008
Awesome!!!!!!! Jason is the best. Everything he does is perfect for his voice!! Great job!!
Jcast 12:35 pm on April 9, 2008
Hard for Jason CASTRO to do a “crappy” version of anything, and especially hard for him to do a “white-boy” version since he’s a Latino whose parents are both from Colombia. So, KD, in my opinion, that makes your racist rantings wrong on many levels. I do, however, agree with the part about Iz’s “great” vesion - gotta give it up for the late Israel Kamakawiowo’ole who’s version of Over the Rainbow Jason paid beautiful homage to last night.

Thank you Jason for recognizing the “Magic” that braddah Iz brought to “Over the Rainbow”. I live in Hawaii and have enjoyed seeing Iz perform live over the years. Many don’t know this but Iz knew he was dying and went solo from a famous island band called the “Makaha Sons” so that he could financially secure his family after his death. During this time he made some of his greatest music. This is when he captured the Magic in OTR. Jason did a great job. God Bless!
Peggy 9:21 am on April 11, 2008
See Jason using your voice softly and showing control and personality is more effective than most people who scream belting out thier songs! Keep up that style! A sure winner beyond American Idol! Absolutely Fanstastic
